Breakages and Sized Count

Expressing warp breaks per unit length so mills can be compared, and finding the count of yarn after sizing.

Breaks per million metres

A warper or sizer reports “one break every 51 lb” — but 51 lb of Ne 21 is a very different length from 51 lb of Ne 10. Convert poundage to yardage with the count and the comparison becomes fair:

yards per break = Ne × lb per break × 840   ·   metres = yards ÷ 1.0936   ·   breaks per 10 million m = 10⁷ ÷ metres per break

The Ne 60 warp breaking every 27 lb (8 breaks per 10 million m) is actually performing better than the Ne 21 warp breaking every 51 lb (12 breaks). Poundage flatters coarse yarns.

Count of sized yarn

Size adds weight but no length, so the yarn becomes “coarser”. The sized count is needed for loom-side yarn stock calculations and for weight-based selling of fabric.

Sized count = Ne ÷ (1 + size add-on)  →  20 ÷ 1.125 = 17.8
