Stitching Costing I — Linear Rating

How many metres of fabric does one sheet, fitted sheet or pillow case consume? Cut lengths, hems, margins and wastage.
Cut lengthLinear ratingWastage

From a finished size to a cut length

A finished flat sheet of 178 × 260 cm is cut larger: hems top and bottom, margins on the sides. If the fabric is wide enough the sheet is cut across the width (“inverted”), so the cut length along the roll is the finished width plus side margins; otherwise it runs along the roll. The linear rating is the cut length in metres, and a wastage allowance is added to give the final rating used in costing.

The original worksheet chooses between four cutting layouts with nested IF formulas (inverted or not, selvedge allowance or not). The rule of thumb survives every layout: linear rating = cut length along the roll ÷ 39.37, rounded up to the cent, plus wastage.
