Weight of Fabric
The quick GSM estimate and the exact calculation, shared with Weaving Calculations Lecture 5.
GSMoz/yd²
Two ways to weigh a cloth before it is woven
The quick rule: for Ne counts and a square yard of cloth, GSM ≈ ( EPI / Newarp + PPI / Neweft ) × 25. It assumes about 10% crimp and ignores width effects, but it is close enough to sort constructions into sheeting, poplin, drill and canvas.
| A | B | C | D | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sheeting | Drill | Your fabric | |
| 2 | Warp Ne | |||
| 3 | Weft Ne | |||
| 4 | EPI | |||
| 5 | PPI | |||
| 6 | GSM (approx.) | 150 | 254 | 171 |
| 7 | oz / yd² (GSM ÷ 33.9) | 4.42 | 7.49 | 5.04 |
