Multiple Counts I – Yarns Together or Twisted

Resultant count and price of two or three yarns run together or plied, using the price of one hank.
Resultant countHank pricePlied yarn

The idea: add weights, not counts

When two yarns of different counts run side by side (or are twisted together) the resulting yarn is heavier than either. Counts cannot be averaged directly because Ne is an indirect number; what adds up is the weight of one hank of each yarn.

Mean count of n yarns together = n / ( 1/N₁ + 1/N₂ + … + 1/Nₙ )   ·   Twisted (plied) count = mean count / n

Prices are handled the same way: convert the price of 10 lb of each yarn into the price of one hank (840 yd), average the hank prices, then multiply back by the mean count.

Hank price = price per 10 lb ÷ 10 ÷ Ne   ·   Price of mix per 10 lb = mean hank price × mean count × 10

Ne 7 and Ne 10 together behave like Ne 8.24, and the plied yarn is Ne 4.12 — not the “average” 8.5 and 4.25. The difference grows as the counts move apart.
