ح و ذḥ-w-dh

(ن) حَاذَ يَحُوْذُ حَوْذًاḥādha yaḥūdhu ḥawdhan: to guard; to drive on.

Form X (istifʿāl) اِسْتَحْوَذَ يَسْتَحْوِذُ اِسْتِحْوَاذًاistaḥwadha yastaḥwidhu istiḥwādhan: to gain complete control, to surround and dominate. Morphological note: no vowel change (iʿlāl) has been applied in this verb (اِسْتَحَاذَistaḥādha is not said), and it is one of the few words in which the original form has been kept — the grammarians have called this an irregularity (shudhūdh). Twice in the Quran: ﴿اِسْتَحْوَذَ عَلَيْهِمُ الشَّيْطٰنُ﴾ (Al-Mujādilah 58:19); ﴿اَلَمْ نَسْتَحْوِذْ عَلَيْكُمْ﴾ (An-Nisāʾ 4:141)
