(ن) غَلَفَ يَغْلُفُ غَلْفًاghalafa yaghlufu ghalfan: to put something into a sheath or cover. (This verb is not used in the Quran.)
(س) غَلِفَ يَغْلَفُ غَلَفًاghalifa yaghlafu ghalafan: to be in a sheath.
اَغْلَفُaghlafu pl. غُلْفٌghulf (adjective on the pattern of اَفْعَلُafʿalu, the pattern of colours and defects): enclosed in a sheath. ﴿وَقَالُوْا قُلُوْبُنَا غُلْفٌ ۭ بَلْ لَّعَنَهُمُ اللّٰهُ بِكُفْرِهِمْ﴾ (Al-Baqarah 2:88) Note (بَلْbal): it is used in two ways: (1) if what precedes بَلْbal is false, «كَلَّاkallā» is elided and the sense is «by no means; rather»; (2) if what precedes is true, بَلْbal means «but».
