(ن) ظَنَنَ يَظْنُنُẓanana yaẓnunu (original form) ⟵ ظَنَّ يَظُنُّ ظَنًّاẓanna yaẓunnu ẓannan: to suppose, to think. It is one of the verbs of the heart (afʿāl al-qulūb) and takes two objects. Its sense inclines both ways and is determined by the context: (1) a preponderant supposition, i.e. holding something as near to certainty — in ﴿الَّذِيْنَ يَظُنُّوْنَ أَنَّهُمْ مُّلَاقُوْا رَبِّهِمْ﴾ (Al-Baqarah 2:46) most of the exegetes have taken it in the sense of certainty; (2) a weak supposition or doubt, which occurs in contexts of censure — ﴿وَإِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَظُنُّوْنَ﴾ (Al-Baqarah 2:78).
ظَنٌّẓann pl. ظُنُوْنٌẓunūn (noun, ism dhāt): supposition, thought.
ظَنِيْنٌẓanīn (فَعِيْلٌfaʿīl): one who is accused, suspected.
