(ض) وَأَدَ يَئِدُ وَأْدًاwaʾada yaʾidu wa-ʾdan: to bury alive, especially to bury a girl alive — this was a horrific custom of the people of the Jāhiliyyah.
مَوْءُوْدَةmawʾūdah (passive participle, ism mafʿūl, feminine): a girl who was buried alive. Only once in the Quran, among the scenes of the Day of Resurrection: ﴿وَإِذَا الْمَوْءُوْدَةُ سُئِلَتْ بِأَيِّ ذَنْۢبٍ قُتِلَتْ﴾ (At-Takwīr 81:8–9) — Note: the question is put not to the killer but to the one killed, and that is the sharpest edge of this verse.
