ط و رṭ-w-r
— طَوْرṭawr pl. أَطْوَارaṭwār: state, degree, stage; also limit. And «الطُّوْرaṭ-ṭūr» is the mountain on which Mūsā (peace be upon him) was spoken to — from this comes the name of the surah. The lexicographers say the original sense is that of limit and extent. 11 times in the Quran: ﴿وَقَدْ خَلَقَكُمْ أَطْوَارًا﴾ (Nūḥ 71:14) — i.e. He created you by taking you through various stages; and ﴿وَرَفَعْنَا فَوْقَكُمُ الطُّوْرَ﴾ (Al-Baqarah 2:63).
