ص ل ص لṣ-l-ṣ-l
(quadriliteral, rubāʿī) — صَلْصَالٌṣalṣāl: dry ringing clay, mud that has dried and begun to clink; the lexicographers hold two views: (1) a reduplication of ṣ l l, meaning ringing clay — this is the preferred view (2) from صَلَّ اللَّحْمُṣalla al-laḥm, i.e. foul-smelling clay — and the qualification «مِنْ حَمَاٍ مَّسْنُوْنٍmin ḥamaʾ mmasnūn» is cited in support of this. Four times in the Quran: ﴿خَلَقَ الْاِنْسَانَ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ كَالْفَخَّارِ﴾ (Ar-Raḥmān 55:14); ﴿مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِّنْ حَمَاٍ مَّسْنُوْنٍ﴾ (Al-Ḥijr 15:26)
