ش ط نsh-ṭ-n

(ن) شَطَنَ يَشْطُنُ شُطُوْنًاshaṭana yashṭunu shuṭūnan: to go far away, to turn aside from the truth; hence شَطَنٌshaṭan, the long rope with which a bucket is tied.

شَيْطٰنٌshayṭān pl. شَيٰطِيْنُshayṭīnu: rebellious and far removed; the lexicographers hold two views about its root: (1) from sh-ṭ-n, pattern فَيْعَالٌfayʿāl, i.e. one who is far from mercy — this is the preferred view, and the plural شَيٰطِيْنُshayṭīnu supports it; (2) from sh-y-ṭ (to burn, to perish), pattern فَعْلَانُfaʿlānu. 88 times in the Quran, every time in the form of this noun.
