ق ر ءq-r-ʾ

(ف) قَرَاَ يَقْرَاُ قِرَآءَةً وَقُرْاٰنًاqaraʾa yaqraʾu qirāʾatan wa-qurānan: to bring two things together, to gather; with this basic sense it is used in several meanings: (1) to read, to recite (the reader gathers letters and words together) (2) to recite to someone; in this sense it takes the preposition «عَلٰىʿalā» (3) to pass a period of time (a period comes into being by joining the beginning and end of a fixed time).

اِقْرَاْiqrā (imperative, amr): read!, recite! ﴿اِقْرَاْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِيْ خَلَقَ﴾ (Al-ʿAlaq 96:1); ﴿فَاِذَا قَرَاْتَ الْقُرْاٰنَ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللّٰهِ﴾ (An-Naḥl 16:98)

قُرْاٰنٌqurān (verbal noun, maṣdar, also a noun, ism dhāt): that which is read, a message, a book; technically this word is now reserved for the final revelation alone, so its use for any other book is not considered correct. ﴿اِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهُۥ وَقُرْاٰنَهُۥ﴾ (Al-Qiyāmah 75:17); ﴿شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِيْٓ اُنْزِلَ فِيْهِ الْقُرْاٰنُ﴾ (Al-Baqarah 2:185)

قُرْءٌqurʾ pl. قُرُوْٓءٌqurūʾ (noun, ism dhāt): a period; in the Quran it is used for the combined period of a woman's purity and menstruation (the lexicographers count it among the words with opposite meanings: both purity and menstruation). ﴿وَالْمُطَلَّقٰتُ يَتَرَبَّصْنَ بِاَنْفُسِهِنَّ ثَلٰثَةَ قُرُوْٓءٍ﴾ (Al-Baqarah 2:228)

Form IV (ifʿāl) اَقْرَاَ يُقْرِئُ اِقْرَآءًaqraʾa yuqriʾu iqrāʾan: to teach someone to read, to make recite. ﴿سَنُقْرِئُكَ فَلَا تَنْسٰٓى﴾ (Al-Aʿlā 87:6)
