ل ی سl-y-s
— لَيْسَlaysa: an inert defective verb (fiʿl jāmid nāqiṣ), used to negate in the present; it takes its noun in the nominative and its predicate in the accusative, and a redundant bāʾ (bāʾ zāʾidah) often enters upon its predicate, strengthening the negation. The lexicographers differ over its origin: according to some the original form was «لَا أَيْسَlā aysa» (أَيْسَaysa, meaning to exist), and with the elision of the hamzah it became لَيْسَlaysa. 89 times in the Quran: ﴿لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِۦ شَيْءٌ﴾ (Ash-Shūrā 42:11) and ﴿أَلَيْسَ اللّٰهُ بِأَحْكَمِ الْحَاكِمِيْنَ﴾ (At-Tīn 95:8).
