(ن) هَبَا يَهْبُو هُبُوًّاhabā yahbū hubuwwan: (of dust) to fly up and scatter.
هَبَاءhabāʾ: the fine particles seen floating in a ray of sunlight, which cannot be caught in the hand — for the Arabs this was the ultimate example of a thing without substance or weight. Twice in the Quran, both times in this sense: ﴿وَقَدِمْنَاۤ إِلٰى مَا عَمِلُوْا مِنْ عَمَلٍ فَجَعَلْنَاهُ هَبَاءً مَّنْثُوْرًا﴾ (Al-Furqān 25:23) — i.e. the deeds were turned into scattered particles; and ﴿وَبُسَّتِ الْجِبَالُ بَسًّا فَكَانَتْ هَبَاءً مُّنْۢبَثًّا﴾ (Al-Wāqiʿah 56:5–6).
