ض غ نḍ-gh-n

(س) ضَغِنَ يَضْغَنُ ضِغْنًاḍaghina yaḍghanu ḍighnan: to harbour rancour in the heart.

ضِغْنḍighn pl. أَضْغَانaḍghān: old rancour, a hatred that lies hidden in the heart. The lexicographers say that the original sense is of crookedness and inclination, and rancour is called ḍighn because the heart turns crooked away from the truth. Twice in the Quran, both in Sūrat Muḥammad: ﴿أَمْ حَسِبَ الَّذِيْنَ فِيْ قُلُوْبِهِمْ مَّرَضٌ أَنْ لَّنْ يُّخْرِجَ اللّٰهُ أَضْغَانَهُمْ﴾ (Muḥammad 47:29) and ﴿وَيُخْرِجْ أَضْغَانَكُمْ﴾ (Muḥammad 47:37).
