(ض، س) يَتَمَ يَيْتِمُyatama yaytimu / يَتِمَ يَيْتَمُ يُتْمًاyatima yaytamu yutman: to be left without a father. (this verb is not used in the Quran).
يَتِيْمyatīm pl. يَتَامَيٰ وَأَيْتَامyatāmā wa-ʾaytām: orphan — the lexicographers state that among humans the orphan is one who has lost his father, and among animals one that has lost its mother; the basic sense, moreover, is solitariness and singularity (دُرَّة يَتِيْمَةdurrah yatīmah = a peerless pearl). A morphological point: يَتَامَيٰyatāmā is on the same pattern (فَعَالَيٰfaʿālā) as أَيَامَيٰayāmā and مَرْضَيٰmarḍā.
