(ض) وَرٰى يَرِيْ وَرْيًاwarā yarī wa-ryan (original form: وَرَيَ يَوْرِيُwaraya yawriyu): (1) of a thing, to be hidden behind something (2) of a spark, to be struck from a flint, of fire, to kindle. (This verb is not used in the Quran.)
وَرَآءٌwarāʾ (اصلاً وَرَايٌaṣlan wa-rāy, noun of time or place (ẓarf); mostly occurs as an annexed noun (muḍāf)): (1) behind, after (2) besides. ﴿فَنَبَذُوْهُ وَرَآءَ ظُهُوْرِهِمْ﴾ (Āl ʿImrān 3:187); ﴿وَاُحِلَّ لَكُمْ مَّا وَرَآءَ ذٰلِكُمْ﴾ (An-Nisāʾ 4:24)
Form IV (ifʿāl) اَوْرٰى يُوْرِيْ اِيْرَآءًawrā yūrī īrāʾan: to kindle fire (by striking); مُوْرٍmūr (اصلاً مُوْرِيٌaṣlan mūriy, active participle, ism fāʿil): one who strikes fire. ﴿اَفَرَءَيْتُمُ النَّارَ الَّتِيْ تُوْرُوْنَ﴾ (Al-Wāqiʿah 56:71); ﴿فَالْمُوْرِيٰتِ قَدْحًا﴾ (Al-ʿĀdiyāt 100:2)
Form III (mufāʿalah) وَارٰى يُوَارِيْ مُوَارَاةًwārā yuwārī muwārātan: to hide, to cover. ﴿لِيُرِيَهُۥ كَيْفَ يُوَارِيْ سَوْءَةَ اَخِيْهِ﴾ (Al-Māʾidah 5:31); ﴿قَدْ اَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمْ لِبَاسًا يُّوَارِيْ سَوْاٰتِكُمْ﴾ (Al-Aʿrāf 7:26)
Form VI (tafāʿul) تَوَارٰى يَتَوَارٰى تَوَارِيًاtawārā yatawārā tawāriyan: to become hidden, to go out of sight. ﴿يَتَوَارٰى مِنَ الْقَوْمِ مِنْ سُوْٓءِ مَا بُشِّرَ بِهِۦ﴾ (An-Naḥl 16:59); ﴿حَتّٰى تَوَارَتْ بِالْحِجَابِ﴾ (Ṣād 38:32)
