ط م ثṭ-m-th

(ض) طَمَثَ يَطْمِثُ طَمْثًاṭamatha yaṭmithu ṭamthan: to touch, to lay a hand on — especially in the sense of sexual intercourse; also to stain with blood. The lexicographers say the original sense is staining with blood, and from this menstruation is called طَمْثṭamth. Twice in the Quran, both in Sūrat al-Raḥmān and both with the same word: ﴿لَمْ يَطْمِثْهُنَّ إِنْسٌ قَبْلَهُمْ وَلَا جَآنٌّ﴾ (Ar-Raḥmān 55:56, 74). Note: the verb form (bāb) is determined from the Quranic form (ṣīghah) «يَطْمِثْyaṭmith».
