— شُؤْمٌshuʾm (noun, ism dhāt): ill omen, inauspiciousness — the opposite of يُمْنyumn; the lexicographers say that the Arabs described the right as يُمْنyumn (blessing) and the left as شُؤْمshuʾm, and the name of Syria, «الشَّامash-shām», is also from this, since it lies to the left of the Kaʿbah.
مَشْـَٔمَةٌmashـٔmah (noun of time or place, ẓarf / mīmī verbal noun, maṣdar mīmī): the left side, and hence the side of ill omen; «اَصْحٰبُ الْمَشْـَٔمَةِaṣḥābu al-mashـٔmat» i.e. the people of the left hand. ﴿وَاَصْحٰبُ الْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ اَصْحٰبُ الْمَشْـَٔمَةِ﴾ (Al-Wāqiʿah 56:9); ﴿وَالَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا بِاٰيٰتِنَا هُمْ اَصْحٰبُ الْمَشْـَٔمَةِ﴾ (Al-Balad 90:19)Three times in the Quran.
