(ن) سَرَجَ يَسْرُجُ سَرْجًاsaraja yasruju sarjan: to light up; to illuminate.
سِرَاجٌsirāj pl. سُرُجٌsuruj (noun, ism dhāt): a lamp; a source of light — the Quran uses this word both for the sun (سِرَاجًا وَّهَّاجًاsirājan wwahhājan) and for the noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (سِرَاجًا مُّنِيْرًاsirājan mmunīran). A morphological point: the difference between سِرَاجsirāj and مِصْبَاحmiṣbāḥ is that the sirāj is itself the source of light, while the miṣbāḥ is a noun of instrument (ism ālah), i.e. the means of giving light. ﴿وَجَعَلَ فِيْهَا سِرٰجًا وَّقَمَرًا مُّنِيْرًا﴾ (Al-Furqān 25:61); ﴿وَّدَاعِيًا اِلَي اللّٰهِ بِاِذْنِهِۦ وَسِرَاجًا مُّنِيْرًا﴾ (Al-Aḥzāb 33:46); ﴿وَجَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ سِرَاجًا﴾ (Nūḥ 71:16); ﴿وَّجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَّهَّاجًا﴾ (An-Nabaʾ 78:13)This root occurs 4 times in the Quran.
