(ف) سَحَلَ يَسْحَلُ سَحْلًاsaḥala yasḥalu saḥlan: to scrape; to wear thin by rubbing; whence مِسْحَلٌmisḥal (a file).
سَاحِلٌsāḥil (active participle, ism fāʿil): the seashore — the lexicographers say the name is on the pattern of the active participle (ism fāʿil) but the meaning is that of the passive participle (ism mafʿūl) (مَسْحُوْلmasḥūl), because the water keeps scraping away at the shore. ﴿فَلْيُلْقِهِ الْيَمُّ بِالسَّاحِلِ﴾ (Ṭā Hā 20:39)Only once in the Quran.
