(ن) سَبَطَ يَسْبُطُ سَبْطًاsabaṭa yasbuṭu sabṭan: to spread out; to extend; سَبِطُ الشَّعْرِsabiṭu ash-shaʿr, i.e. straight long hair (the opposite of جَعْدjaʿd).
سِبْطٌsibṭ pl. اَسْبَاطٌasbāṭ: a branch of a lineage; a grandson; the Quran uses this very word for the twelve families of the Children of Israel — as if they were the spreading branches of the lineage of Yaʿqūb (peace be upon him); the lexicographers say that what is called قَبِيْلَةqabīlah among the Arabs is called سِبْطsibṭ among the Children of Israel. Five times in the Quran, each time in the plural: ﴿وَمَآ اُنْزِلَ اِلٰٓى اِبْرٰهِيْمَ وَاِسْمٰعِيْلَ وَاِسْحٰقَ وَيَعْقُوْبَ وَالْاَسْبَاطِ﴾ (Al-Baqarah 2:136); ﴿وَقَطَّعْنٰهُمُ اثْنَتَيْ عَشْرَةَ اَسْبَاطًا اُمَمًا﴾ (Al-Aʿrāf 7:160)
