م ح نm-ḥ-n
(ف) مَحَنَ يَمْحَنُ مَحْنًاmaḥana yamḥanu maḥnan: to try, to test. (This verb is not used in the Quran.)
Form VIII (iftiʿāl) اِمْتَحَنَ يَمْتَحِنُ اِمْتِحَانًاimtaḥana yamtaḥinu imtiḥānan: to test with care, to examine; the name of Sūrat al-Mumtaḥanah is from this. ﴿اُولٰٓئِكَ الَّذِيْنَ امْتَحَنَ اللّٰهُ قُلُوْبَهُمْ لِلتَّقْوٰى﴾ (Al-Ḥujurāt 49:3); ﴿فَامْتَحِنُوْهُنَّ﴾ (Al-Mumtaḥanah 60:10)
