(ف) لَهَبَ يَلْهَبُ لَهَبًاlahaba yalhabu lahaban: (of fire) to blaze (this verb is not used in the Quran).

لَهَبlahab: pure flame without smoke. "أَبُوْ لَهَبٍabū lahab" is the patronymic (kunyah) of Abū ʿUzzā, and the surah takes its name from it — and the exegetes have pointed out a subtle fittingness here, that the very patronymic was foretelling his end. Three times in the Quran: ﴿تَبَّتْ يَدَاۤ أَبِيْ لَهَبٍ﴾ (Al-Masad 111:1), ﴿سَيَصْلٰى نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ﴾ (Al-Masad 111:3), ﴿لَا ظَلِيْلٍ وَّلَا يُغْنِيْ مِنَ اللَّهَبِ﴾ (Al-Mursalāt 77:31).
