(س) خَشِيَ يَخْشٰى خَشْيَةًkhashiya yakhshā khashyatan: to fear, to be afraid. Some lexicons (for example al-Muʿjam al-Wasīṭ and al-Bustān) state that this verb carries the sense of fearing someone out of reverence and awe; indeed this is its true and basic meaning. ﴿اِنَّمَا يَخْشَي اللّٰهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمٰٓؤُا﴾ (Fāṭir 35:28)Usage: it generally takes its object directly: ﴿ذٰلِكَ لِمَنْ خَشِيَ رَبَّهُۥ﴾ (Al-Bayyinah 98:8); sometimes its object is a clause beginning with «اَنْan», which is محلاًmḥlan in the accusative (manṣūb): ﴿اِنِّيْ خَشِيْتُ اَنْ تَقُوْلَ﴾ (Ṭā Hā 20:94); and sometimes it also takes the preposition «مِنْmin» or bi-: خَشِيَ الْمَوْتَkhashiya al-mawta, وَمِنَ الْمَوْتِwamina al-mawt, وَبِاَنْ يَّمُوْتَwabiʾan yyamūta.
اِخْشَikhsha (imperative, amr): fear. ﴿فَلَا تَخْشَوْهُمْ وَاخْشَوْنِ﴾ (Al-Māʾidah 5:3)
خَشْيَةٌkhashyah (pattern فَعْلَةfaʿlah, verbal noun, maṣdar): fear. ﴿وَلَا تَقْتُلُوْٓا اَوْلَادَكُمْ خَشْيَةَ اِمْلَاقٍ﴾ (Al-Isrāʾ 17:31)
