— اِسْتَكَانَ يَسْتَكِيْنُ اِسْتِكَانَةًistakāna yastakīnu istikānatan (form istifʿāl): to humble oneself, to implore, to bow down. A morphological disagreement: the lexicographers have two views — (1) it is from k-w-n and the original form was اِسْتَكْوَنَistakwana; (2) it is from k-y-n (كَيْنkayn, i.e. lowliness and abasement). The grammarians have also noted that no vowel change (iʿlāl) took place in it and the alif remained, resembling اسْتَحْوَذَastaḥwadha. Twice in the Quran: ﴿فَمَا اسْتَكَانُوْا لِرَبِّهِمْ وَمَا يَتَضَرَّعُوْنَ﴾ (Al-Muʾminūn 23:76) and ﴿وَمَا ضَعُفُوْا وَمَا اسْتَكَانُوْا﴾ (Āl ʿImrān 3:146).
