— كَأْسkaʾs pl. كُؤُوْس وَكِئَاسkuʾūs wa-kiʾās: a full cup; the lexicographers state explicitly that an empty cup is not called كَأْسkaʾs; it is called قَدَحqadaḥ — that is, being full is part of the word's meaning. For this reason it always occurs in the Quran in the context of the wine of Paradise. Six times in the Quran: ﴿يُطَافُ عَلَيْهِمْ بِكَأْسٍ مِّنْ مَّعِيْنٍ﴾ (Aṣ-Ṣāffāt 37:45), ﴿وَكَأْسًا دِهَاقًا﴾ (An-Nabaʾ 78:34), ﴿يُسْقَوْنَ فِيْهَا كَأْسًا كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا زَنْجَبِيْلًا﴾ (Al-Insān 76:17).
