(ض) هَمَزَ يَهْمِزُ هَمْزًاhamaza yahmizu hamzan: to press, to prod; and from this, to find fault behind someone's back and to taunt.
هَمَّازhammāz (pattern فَعَّالfaʿʿāl) وَهُمَزَةwahumazah (pattern فُعَلَةfuʿalah): both are intensive patterns, i.e. a habitual fault-finder — and from this comes the name of the sūrah.
هَمَزَاتhamazāt pl. هَمْزَةhamzah: the whisperings and proddings of Satan. The lexicographers explain the difference between لَمْزlamz and هَمْزhamz thus: hamz is done behind one's back and lamz to one's face. Three times in the Quran: ﴿وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ﴾ (Al-Humazah 104:1), ﴿هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّاءٍۭ بِنَمِيْمٍ﴾ (Al-Qalam 68:11), ﴿وَأَعُوْذُ بِكَ رَبِّ أَنْ يَّحْضُرُوْنِ﴾ together with ﴿مِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِيْنِ﴾ (Al-Muʾminūn 23:97).
