ھ م نh-m-n

— مُهَيْمِنmuhaymin (pattern مُفَيْعِلmufayʿil): guardian, protector, witness and overseer. The lexicographers differ as to its origin: (1) it is from a-m-n, the original form being مُؤَأْمِنmuʾaʾmin, the hamzah then changed to hāʾ — this is the view of most; (2) it is an independent quadriliteral root h-m-n. Twice in the Quran, and both uses are significant: of the Quran, ﴿مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ وَمُهَيْمِنًا عَلَيْهِ﴾ (Al-Māʾidah 5:48) — i.e. the guardian and protector of the earlier scriptures; and among the names of God, ﴿الْمُؤْمِنُ الْمُهَيْمِنُ الْعَزِيْزُ﴾ (Al-Ḥashr 59:23).
