غ ش وgh-sh-w

(س) غَشِيَ يَغْشٰى غَشَاوَةًghashiya yaghshā ghashāwatan (original form: غَشِوَ يَغْشَوُghashiwa yaghshawu): to cover something, to conceal it, to overspread it. ﴿وَالَّيْلِ اِذَا يَغْشٰى﴾ (Al-Layl 92:1). Note: this verb comes in the same shape and sense from both the wāwī root (gh-sh-w) and the yāʾī root (gh-sh-y); Form X (اِسْتَغْشٰىistaghshā: to wrap oneself in a garment) is likewise identical in both, but according to some lexicographers (مثلًاmthlan, Aqrab al-Mawārid) Forms IV and II and تفعّلtafaʿʿul (اَغْشٰىaghshā, غَشّٰىghashshā, تَغَشّٰىtaghashshā) come only from the yāʾī root.

غِشَاوَةٌghishāwah (verbal noun (maṣdar) in the sense of an active participle (ism fāʿil)): that which covers a thing, a veil; the word is used more in an abstract than in a physical sense, especially meaning a veil falling over the eye or the heart; in this sense all three vowels on the ghayn (غَشَاوَةghashāwah, غِشَاوَةghishāwah, غُشَاوَةghushāwah) are correct. ﴿وَعَلٰٓى اَبْصَارِهِمْ غِشٰوَةٌ﴾ (Al-Baqarah 2:7)

غَاشٍghāsh pl. غَوَاشٍghawāsh, feminine غَاشِيَةٌghāshiyah (active participle (ism fāʿil)): that which overspreads; a covering. ﴿هَلْ اَتٰىكَ حَدِيْثُ الْغَاشِيَةِ﴾ (Al-Ghāshiyah 88:1)

Form IV (ifʿāl) اَغْشٰى يُغْشِيْ اِغْشَاءًaghshā yughshī ighshāʾan: to cover someone with something. ﴿فَاَغْشَيْنٰهُمْ فَهُمْ لَا يُبْصِرُوْنَ﴾ (Yā Sīn 36:9)

Form II (tafʿīl) غَشّٰى يُغَشِّيْ تَغْشِيَةًghashshā yughashshī taghshiyatan: to spread something over someone gradually and thoroughly. ﴿فَغَشّٰىهَا مَا غَشّٰى﴾ (An-Najm 53:54)

Form V (tafaʿʿul) تَغَشّٰى يَتَغَشّٰى تَغَشِّيًاtaghashshā yataghashshā taghashshiyan: to overspread someone deliberately. ﴿فَلَمَّا تَغَشّٰىهَا حَمَلَتْ حَمْلًا خَفِيْفًا﴾ (Al-Aʿrāf 7:189)

Form X (istifʿāl) اِسْتَغْشٰى يَسْتَغْشِيْ اِسْتِغْشَاءًistaghshā yastaghshī istighshāʾan: to cover oneself with something. ﴿وَاسْتَغْشَوْا ثِيَابَهُمْ﴾ (Nūḥ 71:7)
