ف ء یf-ʾ-y

(ف) فَأَي يَفْأَي فَأْيًاfaʾā yafʾā faʾyan: to tear something apart, to break it into pieces. (This verb is not used in the Quran.)

فِئَةٌfiʾah pl. فِئَاتٌfiʾāt (noun (ism dhāt)): a torn-off piece; hence a company of people, a group. Some lexicographers derive it from f-y-ʾ (to return), that is, the group to which people return.
