ض ح وḍ-ḥ-w

(ن) ضَحَا يَضْحُو ضَحْوًاḍaḥā yaḍḥū ḍaḥwan: to come out into the sunshine, to be exposed to the sun.

ضُحًيḍuḥany: the forenoon, the time of day when the sun has risen high and its light has spread — and from this the surah takes its name.

Form IV (ifʿāl) أَضْحَيٰaḍḥā: to enter the forenoon; also to become.

أُضْحِيَةuḍḥiyah: the sacrifice (as it is offered at this time). Seven times in the Quran: ﴿وَالضُّحٰى﴾ (Aḍ-Ḍuḥā 93:1), ﴿وَأَنَّكَ لَا تَظْمَؤُا فِيْهَا وَلَا تَضْحٰى﴾ (Ṭā Hā 20:119) — i.e. you will neither thirst nor be exposed to the sun. Note: the verb form (bāb) is determined from the Quranic form «تَضْحٰىtaḍḥā».
