(ن) عَمَّ يَعُمُّ عُمُوْمًاʿamma yaʿummu ʿumūman (original form: عَمَمَ يَعْمُمُʿamama yaʿmumu): to cover all, to include everyone.
عَمّʿamm pl. أَعْمَامaʿmām (feminine عَمَّةʿammah pl. عَمَّاتʿammāt): paternal uncle, paternal aunt.
عَامَّةʿāmmah: the common people. "عَمَّʿamma" also occurs in the sense of "عَنْ مَاʿan mā" (with the nūn assimilated into the mīm) — and Sūrat al-Nabaʾ opens with it: ﴿عَمَّ يَتَسَاءَلُوْنَ﴾, which is not from this root but a compound of a preposition (ḥarf jarr) and an interrogative noun. In the Quran (as this root) five times: ﴿أَوْ بُيُوْتِ أَعْمَامِكُمْ أَوْ بُيُوْتِ عَمَّاتِكُمْ﴾ (An-Nūr 24:61).
