ع ب سʿ-b-s

(ض) عَبَسَ يَعْبِسُ عُبُوْسًاʿabasa yaʿbisu ʿubūsan: to knit the brows; to scowl; to contract the face.

عَبُوْسʿabūs (pattern فَعُوْلfaʿūl): extremely stern-faced; deeply distressing — the Quran uses this very epithet for the Day of Resurrection. Three times in the Quran: ﴿عَبَسَ وَتَوَلّٰۤي﴾ (ʿAbasa 80:1) — and from this comes the name of the surah; ﴿ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ﴾ (Al-Muddaththir 74:22); ﴿يَوْمًا عَبُوْسًا قَمْطَرِيْرًا﴾ (Al-Insān 76:10).
