(س) أَشِرَ يَأْشَرُ أَشَرًاashira yaʾsharu asharan: to grow insolent on receiving a blessing and exceed all bounds, to boast. The lexicographers distinguish it from بَطَرbaṭar in that أَشَرashar foregrounds rebelliousness and wanton pride. From the pattern of the adjective (فَعِلfaʿil) the verb form (bāb) is known to be samiʿa.
أَشِرashir (pattern (wazn) فَعِلfaʿil, qualificative adjective (ṣifah mushabbahah)): insolent boaster. Twice in the Quran, both in the same context: ﴿بَلْ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرٌ﴾ (Al-Qamar 54:25); ﴿مَنِ الْكَذَّابُ الْأَشِرُ﴾ (Al-Qamar 54:26) — that is, the very charge the people of Thamūd laid was turned back on them the very next day.
