(ن) أَلَا يَأْلُو أَلْوًا وَأُلُوًّاalā yaʾlū al-wan wa-ʾuluwwan: to fall short in something, to diminish; usually occurs with a negation. ﴿لَا يَاْلُوْنَكُمْ خَبَالًا﴾ (Āl ʿImrān 3:118) — that is, they spare no effort in harming you.
Form IV (ifʿāl) آلٰى يُؤْلِيْ إِيْلَاءًālā yuʾlī īlāʾan: to swear an oath, especially an oath to keep away from one's wife — hence the juristic term īlāʾ. ﴿لِلَّذِيْنَ يُؤْلُوْنَ مِنْ نِّسَآئِهِمْ﴾ (Al-Baqarah 2:226)
Form VIII (iftiʿāl) ائْتَلٰى يَأْتَلِيْ ائْتِلَاءًaʾtalā yaʾtalī aʾtilāʾan: to swear an oath; also to fall short. ﴿وَلَا يَاْتَلِ اُولُوا الْفَضْلِ مِنْكُمْ﴾ (An-Nūr 24:22)ālāʾ (plural, singular أَلًيal-any or إِلْيily): blessings, favours — this very word is repeated thirty-one times in Sūrat al-Raḥmān. ﴿فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ﴾ (Ar-Raḥmān 55:13). This root occurs 37 times in the Quran: once as a bare triliteral, once in the form ifʿāl, once in the form iftiʿāl, and 34 times as ālāʾ.
