(ف) وَزَعَ يَزَعُ وَزْعًاwazaʿa yazaʿu wa-zʿan: to hold back, to restrain; and from this, to arrange people in ranks by holding them back in turn.

وَازِعwāziʿ: one who holds back. In the Quran in two different forms: (1) passive voice ﴿فَهُمْ يُوْزَعُوْنَ﴾ (An-Naml 27:17) — i.e. those in front are held back so that those behind may join them, which is the discipline of marshalling ranks; (2) in the ifʿāl form as a supplication ﴿رَبِّ أَوْزِعْنِيْۤ أَنْ أَشْكُرَ نِعْمَتَكَ﴾ (An-Naml 27:19, Al-Aḥqāf 46:15) — i.e. keep me steadfast upon this and keep me restrained towards it.
