(ض) وَتَدَ يَتِدُ وَتْدًاwatada yatidu wa-tdan: to drive in a peg, to hammer in a stake.
وَتِدwatid pl. أَوْتَادawtād: peg, stake. Three times in the Quran, and all three uses are noteworthy: of the mountains, ﴿وَالْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا﴾ (An-Nabaʾ 78:7) — i.e. the pegs of the earth; and as an epithet of Pharaoh, ﴿وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِي الْأَوْتَادِ﴾ (Ṣād 38:12, Al-Fajr 89:10) — on which the exegetes have two views: the firmness of his armies and dominion, or the stakes to which he bound people in order to torture them.
