ص ر ص رṣ-r-ṣ-r
(quadriliteral, rubāʿī) — صَرْصَرٌṣarṣar: a bitterly cold and roaring gale; the lexicographers hold two views: (1) a doubled root (muḍāʿaf) from ṣ-r-r, meaning severe cold (2) from صَرِيْرٌṣarīr (a crackling, rattling sound), i.e. a wind that blows roaring. Both meanings suit the context of the punishment of the people of ʿĀd. Three times in the Quran: ﴿رِيْحًا صَرْصَرًا فِيْٓ اَيَّامٍ نَّحِسَاتٍ﴾ (Fuṣṣilat 41:16); ﴿رِيْحًا صَرْصَرًا فِيْ يَوْمِ نَحْسٍ مُّسْتَمِرٍّ﴾ (Al-Qamar 54:19); ﴿بِرِيْحٍ صَرْصَرٍ عَاتِيَةٍ﴾ (Al-Ḥāqqah 69:6)
