ر ی عr-y-ʿ
— رِيْعٌrīʿ pl. رِيَاعٌ وَاَرْيَاعٌriyāʿ wa-aryāʿ: a high place, a hill, the raised part of a mountain road; the lexicographers say the basic sense is increasing and standing out (رَيْعُ الْاَرْضِrayʿu al-ʾarḍ = abundance of produce). Only once in the Quran, in the rebuke of the people of ʿĀd for their buildings: ﴿اَتَبْنُوْنَ بِكُلِّ رِيْعٍ اٰيَةً تَعْبَثُوْنَ﴾ (Ash-Shuʿarāʾ 26:128)
