ق ر دq-r-d
— قِرْدqird pl. قِرَدَة وَقُرُوْدqiradah wa-qurūd: ape, monkey. The lexicographers say that the bare triliteral (thulāthī mujarrad) of this root is little used; قَرِدَ الشَّعْرُqarida ash-shaʿr, i.e. for hair to become matted, is reported. Three times in the Quran, each time in the plural and in the account of transformation (maskh): ﴿كُوْنُوْا قِرَدَةً خَاسِئِيْنَ﴾ (Al-Baqarah 2:65, Al-Aʿrāf 7:166) and ﴿وَجَعَلَ مِنْهُمُ الْقِرَدَةَ وَالْخَنَازِيْرَ﴾ (Al-Māʾidah 5:60).
