ق ل یq-l-y

(ض) قَلَيٰ يَقْلِيْ قِلًي وَقَلَاءًqalā yaqlī qilany wa-qalāʾan: to bear intense hatred, to forsake with enmity.

قَالٍqāl pl. قَالِيْنqālīn (active participle, ism fāʿil): one who intensely detests. The lexicographers say the original sense is roasting over fire (قَلَي اللَّحْمَqalā al-laḥma), and intense hatred is so named because it burns the heart. Twice in the Quran: ﴿مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلٰى﴾ (Aḍ-Ḍuḥā 93:3) and ﴿إِنِّيْ لِعَمَلِكُمْ مِّنَ الْقَالِيْنَ﴾ (Ash-Shuʿarāʾ 26:168).
