ن ع قn-ʿ-q
(ض) نَعَقَ يَنْعِقُ نَعِيْقًا وَنُعَاقًاnaʿaqa yanʿiqu naʿīqan wa-nuʿāqan: (of a shepherd) to call out to drive the animals, to shout. Only once in the Quran, in the parable of the disbelievers: ﴿وَمَثَلُ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا كَمَثَلِ الَّذِيْ يَنْعِقُ بِمَا لَا يَسْمَعُ إِلَّا دُعَاءً وَّنِدَاءً﴾ (Al-Baqarah 2:171) — i.e. like the shepherd who calls out to animals that hear the sound but do not understand the meaning. Note: the verb form (bāb) is determined by the Quranic form (ṣīghah) «يَنْعِقُyanʿiqu».
