ج ن دj-n-d
— جُنْدjund pl. جُنُوْدjunūd: army, troops; the lexicographers say the original sense is of being gathered and compacted (hence جَنَدjanad, hard ground). 29 times in the Quran: ﴿وَلِلّٰهِ جُنُوْدُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْأَرْضِ﴾ (Al-Fatḥ 48:4); ﴿فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيْحًا وَّجُنُوْدًا لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا﴾ (Al-Aḥzāb 33:9)
