(quadriliteral, rubāʿī, reduplicated) — هُدْهُدhudhud pl. هَدَاهِد وَهَدَاهِيْدhadāhid wa-hadāhīd: hoopoe. The lexicographers say the name was given in imitation of its call (هَدْهَدَ الْحَمَامُhadhada al-ḥamām = the cooing of a dove), and it is one of the Arabic names formed from an onomatopoeic noun (ism ṣawt). Only once in the Quran, in the Prophet Sulaymān's (peace be upon him) review of his hosts: ﴿مَا لِيَ لَاۤ أَرَي الْهُدْهُدَ أَمْ كَانَ مِنَ الْغَائِبِيْنَ﴾ (An-Naml 27:20).
